]According to a survey of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, the people of Bolton are the friendliest people in Britain. Bolton, sitting just north of Manchester, is now a town , like many towns in the Greater Manchester area, which has a rich history ion the textiles industry. Bolton is a former mill town and was the production centre for textiles since Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing a wool and cotton-weaving tradition to the Bolton area.
The urbanisation and development of Bolton largely coincided with the introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Bolton was a 19th-century boomtown, and at its height in 1929 its 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dyeing works made it one of the largest and most productive centres of cotton spinning in the world. Following the First World War British cotton industries declined sharply, and by the 1980s cotton manufacture had virtually ceased in Bolton.
Sporting connections include the Championship and ex-Premier League football club Bolton Wonderers Football Club who play at the University of Bolton Stadium and the WBA World light-welterweight champion Amir Khan was born in Bolton. Bolton is well connected to Manchester but also easily reached from Leeds via the M62 motorway. However an escape to the country is also in easy reach from Bolton and is close to the West Pennine Moors
