The town of Chesterfield lies just southwest of Sheffield and actually sits within the Derbyshire border. On the doorstep to the Peak District, the great outdoors actually is not it’s most famous attribute. Upon visiting Chesterfield you would notice one stand out landmark in the skyline. Chesterfield is most famous for it twisted spire on the Church of St Mary and All Saints. In 1837, the construction of the Chesterfield Line, by George Stephenson, began. During the work, a sizeable seam of coal was discovered during the construction of the Clay Cross Tunnel which benefitted the town greatly. However, between 1981 and 2002 15’000 coal mining jobs in Chesterfield disappeared. Little is noticeable these days of its coal mining days. Nonetheless, like most large towns in the North it has since recovered and boasts many shops. These include famous high street brands, restaurants and cafes. You can also enjoy a walk along the canal or in the Peak District National Park on a bright sunny day.
