Devizes is a market town and civil parish on the west edge of the Vale of Pewsey, approximately 10.5 miles southeast of the Wiltshire town of Chippenham. The Town grew around Devizes Castle which was constructed by the Normans in the 11th Century. Devizes also gained a charter in 1141 permitting regular markets which still continues to this very day. The market is still very popular bringing people to the town from far and wide every Thursday. Unfortunately there is not much left of the Castle today after Oliver Cromwell’s parliament, ordered it to be destroyed after they defeated the royalists.
The Battle of Roundway Down took place on 13 July 1643, during the First English Civil War. A Royalist cavalry force lead by Lord Wilmot won a crushing victory over the Parliamentarians lead by Sir William Waller who were besieging Devizes in central Wiltshire defended by Lord Hopton. Roundway Down and Oliver’s Castle are north of Devizes and now form part of the North Wessex Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Devizes became best known from the 18th century for having the largest corn market in the West Country. The corn exchange was built in 1857, the famous statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of the harvest can been seen above the front door and keeps vigil over the market place. Today it is the ideal venue for Wedding receptions, concerts and large conferences. Devizes has the longest set of locks on Britain’s water ways, a 2 mile stretch of 29 locks can be found on the Kennet and Avon canal at Caen Hill. It takes approximately five hours to pass through the lock system, which was designed by the great canal engineer John Rennie. Also Devizes is home to the Wadworth brewery which has been brewing Ales since 1875 and still delivers cask ales to local pubs and restaurants by horse and trap. You may even get the chance to meet the Shire horses Monty, Max, Archie and Sam whilst on their deliveries.
