Marlborough is a market town in the rural north-east corner of Wiltshire. Situated on the River Kennet and the old bath road, the old road to London before the opening of the M4. The town is 24 miles (39 km) north of Salisbury and 10 miles (16 km) south-east of Swindon.
The first sign of human habitation is on the Marlborough Mound, a 62-foot-high (19 m) prehistoric tumulus within the grounds of the famous Marlborough College. Legend has it that Merlin the enchanter or wizard was laid to rest on the Marlborough mound. Recent radiocarbon dating has found it to date back from about 2400 BC.
In 1204 King John granted a Charter to the Borough which allowed an annual 8 day fair, commencing on 14 August, the vigil of the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady (15 August), in which “all might enjoy the liberties and quittances customary in the fair at Winchester”. He also granted that weekly markets may be held in Marlborough on Wednesdays and Saturdays. These remain to this day.
In 1843, an assembly of Church of England clergymen, with the assistance of the Archbishop of Canterbury, were looking to establish a boarding school with the main purpose of educating the sons of clergy. Hearing that the Castle Inn at Marlborough was unoccupied, they took a lease on it and so Marlborough College started in August 1843 with the admission of its first 199 boys. Past and present pupils become members of Marburians. In 1884, Membership of the Marlburian Club opens up a worldwide network of contacts and opportunities to connect with other Old Marlburians.
Marborough has plenty of accommodation, with superb shopping and a wide choice of places to eat and things to do, walkers can relish the nearby Savernake Forest, to the southeast of the town. Visit here during late spring for the bluebells and in autumn for amazing colours. The North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty comprises much of the countryside around Marlborough and there are ample walking and cycling routes throughout this area. Marlborough is also located very near to the Avebury World Heritage Site. Making the town an ideal destination for a long or short break all year round.
