In Greater Manchester, Oldham is a town in the north of England, amid the Pennines, 7 miles northeast of Manchester. Oldham was a boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and among the first ever industrialised towns, rapidly becoming one of the most important centres of cotton and textile industries in England. At its height, it was the most productive cotton spinning mill town in the world, producing more cotton than France and Germany combined.
However following World War 2, Oldham’s textile industry fell into decline in the mid-20th century. The town’s last mill sadly closed in 1998.
Oldham Athletic, the towns football team, enjoyed a brief spell in the Premier League during 1992–93. The football team has since enjoyed differing success in the professional leagues just below the premier league.
Oldham can boast that some impressive and notable people once called their town its home. These include former Prime Minister, Winston Churchill and Professor Brian Cox. Other celebrities from Oldham include singer from Take That, Mark Owen. Television personalities include Philip Schofield and comedy Duo, Cannon and Ball.
Sitting on the M62, Oldham is well connected to Manchester and Leeds.
