Scarborough is the biggest seaside attraction in Yorkshire. With easy access from the A64 dual carriageway and the A171 from the North East, Scarborough is the destination for many families on hot summer days and bank holidays. The most striking feature of the town’s geography is the high rocky promontory pointing eastward into the North Sea.

Scarborough boasts two beautiful beaches that are connected via the North Bay and South Bay linked Marine Drive. This is an extensive Victorian promenade, built around the base of the headland. Overlooking both bays is Scarborough Castle, which was bombarded by the German warships, SMS Derfflinger and SMS Von der Tann, in the First World War.

Along with its castle Scarborough has some amazing Architecture including The Grand Hotel on the Sea Front. The hotel was completed in 1867 it was one of the largest hotels in the world and one of the first giant purpose-built hotels in Europe. Various elements of the hotel represent certain things. For example, four towers represent the seasons, 12 floors represent the months, 52 chimneys represent the weeks and originally 365 bedrooms represented the days of the year. Outside of the hotel, a blue plaque marks where the novelist Anne Brontë died in 1849. She was buried in the graveyard of St Mary’s Church by the castle.

Unlike a lot of fishing towns and villages, Scarborough still has an active fishing industry.  The harbour enjoys a shop and wooden huts from which members of the public can buy fresh locally caught fish. With an open air theatre, lively sea front, shops and arcades, Scarborough has everything you would want from a day trip to the seaside.
