Sheffield, the steel city. This large South Yorkshire City of Sheffield was once a powerhouse of the north in the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution, with many significant inventions and technologies developed in the city. In the 19th century, the city saw a huge expansion of its traditional cutlery trade, when stainless steel and crucible steel were developed locally, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population. However, international competition in iron and steel caused a decline in these industries in the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with the collapse of coal mining in the area.
The Film “The Full Monty” was set in Sheffield and the undertones of the film are firmly set on the troubles of the decline in work in the city around this time. Today Sheffield has bounced back tremendously with a growing economy which grew from £5.6 billion in 1997 to £9.2 billion in 2007. Sheffield is a big city for sport, hosting the World Snooker Championships at the Crucible, has the first ever UK professional Ice Hockey team The Steelers and is home to Sheffield Wednesday FC and Sheffield Utd FC.
Sheffield sits just to the north of the Peak District national Park. If shopping is more your thing then as well as a bustling City centre, you can also visit the Meadowhall Shopping Centre. Sheffield is home to some of the worlds biggest music acts and bands such as Pulp, Joe Cocker, The Human League, The Arctic Monkeys and Def Leppard who have on many occasions filled the Sheffield Arena with adoring Sheffield fans.
